We are here today to celebrate the life of and to pay our respects to fellow firefighter Harold “Lefty” Walters.

Lefty was born in 1925 and would have been 94 years old on May 31st.
Lefty was a 70 year member of Protection Engine Company of the Southold Fire Department and served as Captain of the Rescue Squad from 1970 to 1972. During his extraordinarily long period of service to the Department, Lefty could always be relied upon to willingly and successfully perform whatever tasks he was assigned.

Most importantly, Lefty was a dedicated family man and a constant and vital part of our community. There is none among us who did not recognize Lefty’s many contributions through his business, nor stand in awe of his physical strength and prowess in lifting and moving objects many times larger than one would think possible. If but one word could be used to describe Lefty, that word would be “tireless.”

From his home on Nakomis Road, Lefty raised a large family of his own, and throughout Southold Town, he created an even larger family of dedicated customers along his varied routes. Lefty was a good example of what it meant to be a “First Settler.” He will be missed.

The chiefs, officers and firefighters of the Southold Fire Department will now render their final salute to brother firefighter, Harold “Lefty” Walters and mark his last alarm in the Department’s ledger.
