Shortly before 1400 hours on April 20th, Southold Fire Department was dispatched for a "Signal 16, male, possible CVA" (stroke). Following a rapid assessment of the patient it was determined that the most appropriate care could be obtained at Stony Brook University Hospital which is a Level 1 Trauma and Stroke Center. Transportation to Stony Brook was requested from the Suffolk County Police who dispatched a medevac helicopter to a pre-established landing zone at the northwest corner of Young's Avenue and Route 48.
The patient was stabilized at his home by members of Southold Rescue who transported him by Southold Fire Department Ambulance to the landing zone where patient care was transferred to a Stony Brook Paramedic aboard the Police helicopter for the trip to the hospital.
Scene support was provided at the landing zone by engine 8-4-4 and members of the Southold Fire Police Squad. The entire operation was under the direction of Chief William Byrnes.
