Early morning on September 11th a contingent of Southold Fire Department volunteers gathered to help hoist our ceremonial flag at SFD headquarters. This impressive flag is used to commemorate special occasions, holidays and ceremonies. On this day, in honor of the many firefighters who gave their lives in service on 9/11/2001 we salute their dedication and present an empty suit of firefighting turnout gear to represent their ultimate sacrifice.

Later that afternoon several local Fire Departments, including Cutchogue, East Marion, Greenport, Mattituck, Orient and Southold, along with 5 retired FDNY firefighters gathered at Jean Cochran Park on Peconic Lane at the 9/11 memorial. A large gathering of well-wishers and supporters is always present to participate in the ceremony. The Cutchogue Fire Department Chaplain presented a benediction prayer. The ceremony concludes with a salute to fallen heroes by the firefighters and officers of the collective departments.
