At 1132 hours on Saturday, September 3rd, Southold Fire Department was dispatched for a Signal 16/23 MVA with entrapment. Responding units found a two car collision had occurred in the vicinity of Williamsburg Drive with one driver deceased and the other severely entangled within her vehicle. Chief Rich immediately called for a Suffolk County Police helicopter to respond to Station Two and for Cutchogue Fire Department to provide stand-by ambulance coverage. Under the direction of Chief Rich and Assistant Chief Goldsmith, Southold's Heavy Rescue Team spent over 90 minutes carefully peeling the vehicle away from the trapped driver so that she could be transported via Southold ambulance to Station Two for the flight to trauma unit at Stony Brook University Hospital. Southold Fire Department units remained on scene for an additional 1 1/2 hours assisting Southold Town Police and other authorities in clearing the accident scene.
