Following much planning on the part of its organizers and the USCG, the Great Peconic Race was held on Sunday, September 14th. The first entrants pushed off from Wade's Beach at approximately 0840 hours determined to paddle in a clockwise direction around Shelter Island. Despite a strong northerly wind, the leaders were passing Rocky Point by 0910 and well onto their way to completing the entire voyage in approximately three hours. SFD, along with Shelter Island Fire Department, North Sea Fire Department and Sag Harbor Fire Department assisted the USCG by providing patrol craft and EMT coverage to assure the safety of all 73 participants. Contestants came in all shapes and sizes, as did their craft. SFD's boat got underway at 0730 hours to cover its assigned sector between Rocky Point and Hay Beach. The boat returned to dock and secured from the detail at approximately 1330 hours.
