As part of SFD's new partnership with the USCG that is designed to facilitate responses to marine emergencies and to increase maritime safety, six members of the SFD voyaged to Coast Guard Station Shinnecock to participate in a planning session for the Great Peconic Race, an expedition paddle race that will circumnavigate Shelter Island on Sunday, September 14th. To gain additional familiarity with our equipment and our navigational skills, SFD transited to and from Shinnecock in our own boat; a fact that much impressed the Coast Guard as we were the only one of the several fire departments present to have done so.
