The early Sunday morning hours on September 29th found members from the East Marion and Southold Fire Departments climbing aboard a bus for the annual Tunnel 2 Towers 5K Fundraising event in NYC where we joined thousands of brother and sister professional and volunteer first responders from all over the metropolitan and suburban areas in a run through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, out and through the park to the base of the Freedom Tower to commemorate the actions of Firefighter Stephen Siller on 9/11/01.

"The Siller Family started the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation to honor the memory and carry on the legacy of their brother, Stephen, a New York City firefighter (FDNY) who lost his life on September 11, 2001 after strapping 60 lbs. of gear to his back and rushing on foot through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others."

Several of our members went 'hardcore' and emulated Steven Siller by participating in their turnout gear as well, an extra special effort. Kudos to them!

After the run we walked to the Reflecting Pool Memorial to pay our respects.

Carol Miller did another fantastic job organizing the group, transportation, refreshments and lots of other stuff too! Thank you to Carol and to the many others who helped organize and make this a successful event. The pre-event pasta dinner on Saturday evening, hosted by Carol and Pete at their historic East Marion home, was a fabulous feast of epic proportions where a good time was had by all. Looking forward to 2020 already.
